József Sztajkó: Roma History of Gulliver in Lilliput. Puppet exhibition
Puppet maker József Sztajkó’s private museum presenting the history, traditions and everyday habits of the wandering Roma artisans.
József Sztajkó was born in 1940, in Karcag. Originally a locksmith, he later became a merchant, but has been mainly interested in the history of the Roma. At the age of 12, in 1952, he saw a Gypsy caravan in Romania, which became a source of inspiration for him. He spent a year and a half with them, which provided the opportunity for him to learn the ins and outs of various trades including, among others, bell casting, pottery and ceramics making, wheel making, basket weaving, sieve making and smithing. His first exhibit was in 1994, since then he has had over 150 independent exhibitions all over the country.
